Amethyst
A purple variety of quartz, amethyst is February's birthstone. Durable and readily available, amethyst ranges from large, beautiful crystal forms to elegant pieces of jewelry suitable from daily wear to black tie occasions.
Prized for years on the same level as the "big three" (sapphires, rubies, and emeralds), Amethyst was put into crowns and tiaras, and worn by the likes of bishops and royals. It was used to keep it's wearer quick witted and clear headed in both business affairs and in drinking (people were thought to not get "drunk" if wearing amethyst). At the turn of the 19th century, huge amethyst deposits were found in Brazil that turned amethyst into a popular, more accessible gem. Even today, in crystal form, amethyst is thought to be protective, healing and purifying.
Shopping for Amethyst
Most amethyst is suitable for any piece of jewelry you could want. The majority of amethyst on the market today is free of inclusions, making it not only durable, but a beautiful purple gem. While it may show some signs of wear over time, it is hardy and a great option for rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces.
When shopping for amethyst, you should look for well cut gems that sparkle and reflect light evenly across the gem. You'll be able to tell when an amethyst is not cut well as it will lack it's "oomph." You should look also for even color (no color zoning), no hints of brown or orange (although if you like ametrine you will want orange!), and a lighter tone so it maintains it's purple color.

Caring for Amethyst
Amethyst is a purple quartz, so it is strong and hearty and suitable for various types of jewelry. You don't have to worry about it abrading or being damaged in daily wear, however, as you should with all of your jewelry, it should be the last thing you put on when getting dressed and the first thing you take off.
To clean your amethyst, some warm soapy water and a baby toothbrush will have it sparkling like new. I wouldn't recommend putting it in an ultrasonic as some amethyst is fracture filled, and an ultrasonic can damage the gemstone or dislodge the filling.
